Do Or Die Artwork

Faced with a choice to accept and LIVE with the cancer or to let IT control my life, I chose to live with the cards that have been dealt to me. I was reborn from a stem cell transplant only to be free for one year. Four collapsed vertebrae left no freedom from pain. No cure, regardless of remission, leaves me with infinite infusions.

I decided to learn a new medium, acrylic painting. Painting takes me away mentally to places that fill me with joy, solace, and inspiration. During my 6-12 months of recuperating in isolation, my spirt improved by thinking of beautiful landscapes, often described in poetry, and healing experiences in nature. When I could finally paint, it freed me and gave me focus. Painting took me away to these sites, real and imagined, away from my ailments. My paintings are created with bolder forms and brilliant colors, to express my feelings of living a beautiful life. One I have now.

I designed the frame as an integral part of the painting. The mass of the frame symbolizes the burden I’ve been dealt and the opening to the painting symbolizes breaking through that burden. My husband Kevin Huelster built the frame.

This work was inspired by the poem ‘Dust of Snow’ by Robert Frost.

The way a crow

Shook down on me

The dust of snow

From a hemlock tree

Has given my heart

A change of mood

And saved some part

Of a day I had rued.
