Stairway In The Sand

Though I graduated high school in 1967, my old-world father, then in working-class Old Greenwich, still thought “college was for the two boys” and the three girls had to go to work. So, I did: Serving milk shakes after school at the local drug store until graduation and then working full time for the next 47 years – 36 as a real estate paralegal. Just “paying the mortgage,” never passionate about any of it.

Retired in 2014 at 65, I was determined to recreate myself, spending serious time developing my long-neglected artistic talents. A vacation on the Pacific in Costa Rica made me resume photographing, which I loved, especially near, on, or in the water.

On the beach at Playa Negra, I discovered the ocean cut intricate, beautiful and wildly varied patterns in the volcanic sand, a realistic sea plant? A landscape? Too many abstracts to count. With no training, just instinct, I started shooting fiercely with my iPhone and camera. Friends told me the results showed a “perfect natural eye.”

At their urging, I started exhibiting in 2017, having returned to Costa Rica twice a year (now for six years) to work at it. Though too many viewers were confused by what they saw, I was encouraged by exhibiting in 62 mostly juried group shows in 2018 and 2019, and sometimes picked out of the pack by junior curators from MOMA, the Met and the Guggenheim!

So now I’m a professional photographer, doing what I love, not what I have to do.
