Do Or Die Artwork

Bleeding Hearts

I painted some in the 80's, then more in the 90's, slowly painting more of whatever would inspire me. I had always done illustrations for ad agencies but painting on my own was completely different. But everything came to a grinding halt when my now ex-wife looked at a piece I was working on and said it looked horrible. I was hurt, humiliated and angry. I felt like I never wanted to paint again. I actually took the painting into the garage, threw it on the floor and started throwing and brushing paint on it in a rage. Then my son came in and said "Hey Dad - what's that? Looks pretty cool!" So, it became my very first abstract, appropriately named "Rage".

However, the initial criticism had already sunk in and I was stunned into a complete standstill. I didn't pick up a brush again until about 2009. Then 3 years ago, my current wife bought me a 1-day oil painting class for Valentine’s Day. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving!! Until then, I had only worked in acrylics. When I finished my piece, the teacher congratulated me and said it's obvious I had done this before.

I felt the total turnaround in my confidence. I then took another oil painting class to learn technique, and then started entering art shows and as they say, the rest is history. I've since learned to accept critique focusing more on the source it's coming from.
