Do Or Die Artwork

Jay Petrow

The Dark Side

As a young man I studied classical art, painting portraits and landscapes. Over the next thirty odd years I rarely produced art of any kind as my job as a magazine art director in NY and father of two children took the majority of my time.

However, raising a son with autism created extreme day-to-day stresses for me and our family. Struggling to be a good father, I felt an urgent need to express myself. Feelings of love, anger, joy, sadness, and loss were overwhelming at times. Six years ago, I turned back to art as a conduit for my expression but started to paint in an abstract expressionist style. This allowed me to decipher and directly translate my emotions onto the canvas, instead of focusing on representing reality.

An explosion of vivid color and high energy brush strokes reveal a subconscious level of interaction with my emotions and my spiritual energy. As I connect with my inner world and visualize what's happening on the canvas, I maintain this conversation from within and without throughout the painting process. The entire body of work approximates a place that I inhabit physically and psychologically.

The difficulties I had dealing with my son’s autism led me to discover what I was meant to do with my life. Painting has become a third career for me and something I am truly passionate about. My son gave me the greatest gift anyone could ever give me, discovering who I truly am.
