Do Or Die Artwork

Waiting To Be Free

Every time I approached the canvas, I had a “creative crisis”. Frustrated, I would vow, “I’ll never paint again”. But I always did. However, I despaired that I would never find work compelling enough for a series, which I was desperate to do. Critics would love something I knew I could never repeat saying it was the “best thing I’d ever done”. Or I’d do work I would never want to repeat.

I knew my imminent move to a two-room apartment and the impending birth of a grandchild needing special care would limit my ability to paint. And yet these limitations somehow became a “turning point.” By necessity, I found a new way to present my ideas more quickly. And in the process discovered a synthesis of all my artistic interests. I was encouraged.

The work I enjoy includes detail, color, and pattern, even fantasy or whimsy. Ideas are generated by sorting through my almost endless collection of images, which I use in collages. A theme has emerged: interior space with patterned wallpaper; a figure and “props” that suggest a story supported by a title that invites interpretation by the viewer.

The challenge of solving technical problems that arise is exhilarating, a new adventure every time. The process of creating is thrilling. Even what seems to be a mistake can open up new doors. I am bursting through these doors with new enthusiasm as I imagine the endless possibilities ahead.
