The MUSIC of Do Or Die

Thu March 5, 7-9pm

Don't miss this Rare and Mind-bending Experience!

2 Beethoven Symphonies, 2 audiences in 2 locations (Westport/NYC), One simultaneous concert!

Frederic Chiu works his mastery of combining tech with virtuosity in yet another way, pushing the edge of both the live classical music experience and how technology can create connections and shared experiences between remote audiences.

Kicking off Beethoven’s 250th Birthday year, Beechwood partners with The Westport Library’s “Lance Lundberg Family Foundation Master Series”* and Yamaha to bring you this rare and groundbreaking concert happening simultaneously in NYC and at The Westport Library, with both audiences seeing and hearing the exact same concert at the same time with the performers split between places. Through Beechwood's Salon Around The World program, the 2 audiences will even have opportunities to virtually meet each other live and chat!

In Westport at The Westport Library

Tony-Award winner James Naughton will set the mood by reading Beethoven's famous Heiligenstadt Testament. Renowned pianist Frederic Chiu will then take The Forum stage to play Beethoven's 7th Symphony transcribed by Liszt for solo piano which will magically, identically and simultaneously play a piano on stage in NYC, with the audience listening to the piano play live while also watching on large screen video.

In NYC at Yamaha Artist Services 54th & 5th

The magic will be reversed as duo pianists Corbin Beisner and Margarita Nuller play a four hand version of Beethoven's famous 9th symphony on the piano in NYC while the Westport audience watches them, with their playing Library's new Disklavier piano playing the music exactly as they do in NYC!

The CONVERSATION Of Do Or Die Sun Mar 8, 1-2:30pm

In this Bring-Your-Own-Lunch version of Beechwood’s popular BFD series, we come together as a diverse community to discuss the many aspects of a “Do Or Die” journey. Through private reflection on our diverse personal experiences, we identify common elements that make the Do Or Die journey work and explore ideas on how one might navigate the journey but also reflect on how the arts and others can help them be realized. Expert Facilitator Jeanine Esposito leads a single conversation, with the goal of meaningful conversation, community connection and understanding - and some fun!

Shhhh - Since we will meet in the room just behind the Forum, we may begin with a little surprise musical Amuse Bouche!

About Our Winter Season Theme: "Do Or Die"

By age 32 Beethoven’s deafness was certain.  Overwhelmed, he considered suicide but did not act because, in his own words “…it was my art that held me back… it seemed to me impossible to leave the world until I had brought forth all that I felt was within me.” It was after this lowest point that Beethoven became fearless in his art, “shattering the ground rules of symphonic writing for all time,” and composed the vast majority of his famed lifeworks after deafness overtook him, including 6 of his famed 9 symphonies.

Beechwood is thrilled to be collaborating for the first time with The Westport Library, where we will hold all 3 of our events, exploring the powerful Do or Die theme through Art & Storytelling, Music & Conversation, celebrating the power of the arts to connect community, and help the resilience of the human spirit to overcome, transform.
