Sonic Sanctuary

The Beechwood Sonic Sanctuary is a platform for on-going sound installation and experimentation. Microphones are hidden in the property around The Copper Beech, picking up ambient sounds and transporting them to a central location in or near Beechwood’s Main House.

When guests enter the space, they become aware of sounds they might not notice and they are prompted to walk the property in search of the source of the sounds, which in turn heightens their awareness of all of the sounds around them.

At different points in the property around the microphone areas,Visual Artists have created sculptures or art installations that activate the spaces visually and may even contribute to the ambient sounds.

Future phases may include recording & manipulating sounds as well as creating the opportunity to allow people from anywhere in the world to stream sounds into the Sonic Sanctuary network.  With each transformation, the visual art will be transformed or added to as well!

The Sonic Sanctuary was created through an extensive collaboration between a senior engineer and global innovator, an engineering student, 2 musicians, 2 technologist/makers and 7 visual artists!
